IEC 60068 2 1 Test A: Cold – Ensuring Component Performance in Low Temperature Environments
Standard: IEC 60068‑2‑1: Environmental Testing – Part 2‑1: Tests – Test A: Cold
Scope: IEC 60068‑2‑1 Test A: Cold outlines procedures to determine the suitability of products for use, transport, or storage at low temperatures. The standard includes tests applicable to both non‑heat‑dissipating and heat‑dissipating specimens, simulating gradual temperature changes to assess product resilience. This ensures that components maintain their integrity and functionality when exposed to cold environments.
Applicable Products:
This standard applies to a range of products, including:
- Electronic control units (ECUs)
- Sensors and actuators
- Battery systems
- Lighting systems
- Infotainment systems
- Other components requiring validation for low‑temperature performance
Test Procedure: In our specialized test lab, we conduct IEC 60068‑2‑1 Test A: Cold using state‑of‑the‑art equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results. The test procedures include:
- Test Ab: Cold Test for Non‑Heat‑Dissipating Specimens with Gradual Temperature Change: The component is placed in a chamber at ambient temperature. The temperature is gradually lowered to the specified cold condition to prevent detrimental effects due to temperature change. Once the component stabilizes at the target temperature, it is maintained under these conditions for the required duration to assess its performance.
- Test Ad: Cold Test for Heat‑Dissipating Specimens with Gradual Temperature Change: This procedure is designed for heat‑dissipating specimens. The component is introduced into the test chamber, and the temperature is gradually reduced. Low air velocity circulation is used to allow localized hot spots to develop within the specimen, simulating real‑world conditions.
- Test Ae: Cold Test for Heat‑Dissipating Specimens with Gradual Temperature Change, Specimen Powered Throughout: Like Test Ad, but the specimen remains powered throughout the test, allowing for the assessment of operational performance under cold conditions.
End Result: Successful completion of IEC 60068‑2‑1 Test A: Cold confirms that components can withstand and function effectively in low‑temperature environments.
